Five Scottish and Irish pictures offered at under £1000 on thesaleroom.com
26 November 2019 Early December sees a good number of Scottish and Irish art sales hosted on thesaleroom.com. While key works by the most famous artists can make substantial sums, there’s also plenty on offer further down the price scale.1. Charles Stenhouse’s fishing scene
Dundee-born landscape painter Charles Stenhouse (1878-c.1946) trained at the Glasgow School of Art before later moving to Crail, a small coastal town in the East Neuk of Fife.
While living there, he focused on mainly seascapes and harbour scenes, such as this trademark 20in x 2ft (51 x 61cm) oil on canvas of fishing boats.
Signed and dated 1924, it is estimated at £300-500 at Great Western Auctions in Glasgow on November 29-30.

2. George Russell’s portrait drawing
George William Russell (1867-1935) was born in Co. Amargh and moved to Dublin as a child. He later became a well-known poet, mystic, painter, economist and political figure in support of Irish nationalist causes.
He is often known by his pseudonym ‘AE’ which he derived from the word ‘Aeon’.
This 13.25 x 9.5in (34 x 24cm) pencil drawing, signed with Russell’s ‘AE’ monogram, depicts Irene Haugh, a poet herself who acted as his secretary and contributed much verse to the pages of Russell's Irish Statesman periodical.
She later published her own collection of poetry, The Valley of the Bells, with a preface by Russell.
The drawing is estimated at €600-800 at Whyte’s sale in Dublin on December 2.

3. Ronald Ossory Dunlop’s seascape
A seascape by Irish author and painter Ronald Ossory Dunlop (1894-1973) will be offered at Adam’s of Dublin on December 4.
The painter who studied at Manchester and Wimbledon Schools of Art, as well as in Paris (and helped found the ‘Emotionist Group’), produced works ranging from landscapes to figurative studies to still lifes.
This 13.75 x 17.75in (35 x 45cm) signed oil on canvas of figures on a shore is estimated at €400-600.

4. William Frazer’s Norfolk scene
Landscape artist William Miller Frazer was born in Scone, Perth and travelled widely during his career to places including Algeria, Holland, Italy and Norway.
However, he was also drawn to the Norfolk broads and fens and produced a number of works depicting the region.
This 10in x 14in (25.5cm x 36cm) signed oil on board depicts Coltishall, Norfolk and is estimated at £500-800 at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh on December 5.

5. Muirhead Bone print
Glasgow-born Sir Muirhead Bone (1876-1953) is most celebrated for his detailed topographical and architectural drawings and prints.
However, a lot showing his versatility will be offered at McTear’s on December 8, a 7.75 x 11.75in (19.5cm x 30cm) lithograph of a rural outbuilding.
Signed in pencil, it is mounted and framed under glass. It is estimated at £60-90.
