A watch by the Swiss maker remains a highly desirable object to own and, thanks to auctions offering a wide range of pre-owned examples, they have become more obtainable.

It is estimated at £2800-3200.

2. Rolex Cellini

Rolex Cellini watch

Rolex Cellini watch – estimated at £1500-2000 at Lawrences of Crewkerne.

The Rolex Cellini watch is named after the Italian Renaissance goldsmith, artist and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571). Designed to be a purpose-built dress watch (ie. a timepiece made to be worn with a suit or some other formal attire), it first appeared in the 1960s and became notable for its use of gold and gemstones with elegant lines to give a sense of refinement.

An example of a gentleman’s 18ct gold Rolex Cellini wristwatch is on offer at Lawrences of Crewkerne on April 22. With a quartz movement and Rolex bracelet with a deployant clasp, it is estimated at £1500-2000.

3. Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust

Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust

A Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust steel and gold wristwatch – estimated at £600-800 at Woolley & Wallis.

In 1931, Rolex released the Oyster Perpetual, a watch with an automatic movement. It then added the display of the date in 1945 which gave birth to the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust (reference 4467).

An example of this watch in steel and gold, with a ‘superlative chronometer’ mark and flexible band is on offer at Woolley & Wallis on April 29. It is estimated at £600-800.

4. Lady’s Rolex watch

A lady’s Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date watch – estimated at £500-700 at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood.

As well as men’s watches, plenty of women’s watches are also offered at auctions on thesaleroom.com. An example of a lady’s stainless steel Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date wristwatch from circa 1972 is offered at the Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood sale on April 14-16.

With a circular dial with baton markers and date aperture, it has an original Oyster bracelet and is estimated at £500-700.

A vintage Rolex Tudor stainless steel wristwatch appearing at Huntly Auctions on April 27 is one such example. The Tudor brand dates back to 1926 and has been connected with its older ‘big brother’ Rolex ever since the beginning.
