Five prints offered at auctions on thesaleroom.com including LS Lowry’s ‘The Pond’

Prints are often an attractive and affordable alternative to purchase works by well known artists, including some of the biggest names on the market.

1. LS Lowry 'The Pond'
The industrial landscape, above, is one of LS Lowry’s (1887-1976) most famous works. The Pond depicts the boating lake in Stockport and contains many of the artist’s trademark features – an industrial landscape, smoking chimneys, terraced houses and multiple figures walking in the streets and open spaces.
The original painting is in Tate Britain in London but this signed print, coming up at Wotton Auction Rooms in Gloucestershire on November 19-20, measures about a third of the size at 17.25 x 22.5in (44x 57cm). It is offered with its original authenticated receipt, it is estimated at £2500-3500.

2. Henri Matisse ‘Visages’
‘Lumière rousse, Visages’, a lithograph by Henri Matisse – estimated at £200-300 at Roseberys.
As well as a ground-breaking painter, Henri Matisse (1869-1954) devoted himself to printmaking for over half a century.
His Visages series of 14 lithographs featuring studies of his model Annelies Nelck shows how closely his prints were to his drawings in terms of their simplicity and focus on form and line.
An example from the Visages series is on offer at Roseberys on November 4. Titled Lumière rousse, it dates from 1946 and comes from an edition of 200. It is estimated at £200-300.

3. Frank Brangwyn’s ships
‘Queen Elizabeth's ships’ by Sir Frank Brangwyn – estimated at £100-200 at Peter Francis.
Sir Frank Brangwyn (1867-1956) was an accomplished artist in numerous mediums producing oil paintings, murals, watercolours and illustrations. He also made plenty of prints, especially etchings and lithographs.
Ships and marine subjects were among his favoured subjects and this coloured lithograph from 1919, which is being offered at Peter Francis of Carmarthen on November 6, is titled Queen Elizabeth's ships – a reference to Elizabeth I.
With a label for London dealership the Fine Art Society Limited label on the back, it is estimated at £100-200.

4. Cecil Aldin’s school
‘Harrow Old School’, a lithograph after Cecil Aldin – offered as part of a group lot estimated at £50-80 at Mallams.
Rural and animal scenes were the stock-in-trade of the British artist Cecil Aldin (1870-1935). However, an interesting lithograph offered at Mallams in Abingdon, Oxfordshire on November 2019 depicts Harrow school.
The artist himself, the son of a builder, was educated at Eastbourne College and Solihull Grammar School but produced this 15.5 x 13in (39 x 33cm) lithograph in c.1910.
Offered as part of a group lot along with a signed print of Franklin D Roosevelt by Elizabeth Shoumatoft and a watercolour of a Thames barge, it is estimated at £50-80.

5. Richard Smith abstract
‘Folded Paper Clip Suite’ by Richard Smith – estimated at £200-300 at Forum Auctions.
For fans of contemporary art, this abstract lithograph from 1975 by Richard Smith (1931-2016) is offered at Forum Auctions in London on November 13.
Titled Folded Paper Clip I, it comes from an edition of 42 and is signed and numbered in pencil.
It is estimated at £200-300.
