Five pictures estimated at £1000 or under at specialist fine art auction
25 February 2022 A sale of Old Masters, British and European Paintings will be held at Woolley & Wallis on March 1-2.

The auction will offer more than 600 lots and features a wide range of material in a variety of mediums from small drawings on paper and portrait miniatures to large-scale oil paintings that would have a commanding presence in your living room.
While the Woolley & Wallis sale will include some star lots estimated to make many thousands of pounds, such as a depiction of two women harvesters in a field by French social realist artist Jules Breton (1827-1906) pitched at £25,000-35,000, there are plenty of other works on offer further down the price scale.
Here we select five works from the auction all estimated at up to £1000.
1. Louis Belanger painting
French artist Louis Belanger (1756-1816) was a landscape painter and draughtsman who produced views of France, Italy and Switzerland which were frequently made into prints. He fled his homeland during the French Revolution and came to England before later settling in Sweden. 2. Albert Goodwin painting
This small oil on board depicting a view from the southern Italian city of Naples is by Albert Goodwin (1845-1932), an artist who travelled with John Ruskin through Europe and was influenced by the likes to JMW Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites. The picture measures 7.25 x 10.25 (19 x 26cm) and is estimated at £500-800. View the catalogue entry for this Albert Goodwin painting.
3. Sir Edward Poynter sketch
This black and white chalk drawing of a female nude by the Sir Edward John Poynter, a leading Victorian academic painter and the first Slade professor at University College London, is offered with a £700-1000 estimate. 4. George Vincent landscape
An oil on panel landscape at Bannockburn near Stirling by George Vincent (1796-1831) also appears at the Woolley & Wallis sale. Works by the founder of the Norwich School of artists are comparatively rare due to his short life and this example which previously sold at Christie, Manson & Woods back in 1917 is estimated here at £600-1000. 5. George Balmer evening scene
This nocturne by George Balmer (c.1806-1846) is estimated at £500-800 at the Woolley & Wallis sale. River landscape at night is an oil on panel by the artist who was born in North Shields and produced a number of landscapes depicting the local area.
