Five modern Scottish paintings offered for under £1500 at upcoming auction

The latest auction of Scottish Contemporary art at McTear’s will be held on May 25.
Claire Harrigan (b.1964) was another artist who studied at Glasgow School of Art and her work, with its expressive use of using colours, shapes and textures, follows in the tradition of the Scottish Colourist – one of the key groups in Modern Scottish art. This signed painting of a water pitcher and glass jug, measuring 3ft 1in x 2ft 5in (93 x 74cm) is estimated at £800-1200 at the McTear’s sale. Offering a mix of work from some of the big names in this sector like John Bellany (1942-2013) and Peter Howson (b.1958), it also includes plenty of material pitched at more affordable levels.
Here we pick out five example of pictures estimate at under £1500 at the sale.
1. Highlands village
A painting of a Highlands village by William Wright Campbell (1913-92) is offered with a £400-600 estimate at the McTear’s sale. The 3ft 6in x 2ft 11in (76 x 89cm) signed oil on canvas demonstrated the artist’s impressionist technique with loose brushstrokes and soft colour tones. 2. Tango painting
The artist Andrew Fitzpatrick studied drawing and painting at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in 1988. One of two of his works at the McTear’s sale is The Art Club Tango, a 10.25 x 12.5in (26 x 32cm) signed oil on canvas with a handwritten artist’s label on the back. It is estimated at £500-800. 3. Perthshire landscape
Three examples of the Scottish artist Shelagh Campbell’s landscapes are offered at the McTear’s sale. One from 2013 titled ‘Perthshire poppies and lavender’, a signed 2ft 5in (73cm) square acrylic on canvas, shows the striking colours and semi abstract style she employed. It is pitched at £400-600. 4. Water pitcher

5. The Bridge at Nairn
The artist Ian Scott Elliot (1946-2021) painted views of Mallorca, Italy and France as well as his native Scotland and exhibited at the Royal Glasgow Institute (RGI) and the Paisley Art Institute (PAI) among other galleries. His work was also widely reproduced as prints, calendars and as greeting cards. An example at the McTear’s sale is The Bridge at Nairn, a signed 2ft 1in x 2ft 5in (63 x 74cm) oil on canvas, which is estimated at £300-400.
