Five featured lots in Freeman’s Old Masters sale
31 January 2020 Fifty pictures spanning the 15th to 19th centuries by masters such as Albrecht Durer, Berthe Morisot and William Powell Frith go under the hammer at Freeman’s of Philadelphia next month.The auction, which takes place on February 18, incudes works estimated from $800-250,000. Vincent Van Gogh
Estimated at $120,000-180,000, this signed drawing by Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) is catalogued Bald-Headed Orphan Man, Facing Right. It depicts Dutch pensioner Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland who sat for van Gogh many times. Completed in 1883, it is one of the last times Zuyderland sat for the artist and shows him in profile. It was originally part of a private Dutch collection and was later held in a private collection in New York.
Willem Koekkoek
A member of one of the best-known families of painters in 19th century Amsterdam, Willem Koekkoek (1839-85) distinguished himself with detailed town scenes that were inspired by his numerous trips to The Hague, Utrecht, and Nieuwer Amstel throughout the 1880s. This nostalgic scene, A Busy Street in a Dutch Town is large and captures the feeling of a bustling city. It has an estimate of $50,000-80,000.
Berthe Morisot
Berthe Morisot (1841-95) is remembered for her work as one of the Impressionists, but she also looked to the work of the Old Masters for inspiration. Painted in the last decade of her life, Apollon Révélant sa Divinité à la Bergère Issé records a corner of a picture by François Boucher. It has an estimate of $150,000-250,000.
Circle of Quentin Massys the Elder
This Lamentation, completed in the 16th century and offered with an estimate of $40,000-60,000, is a close copy of a lost prototype that Quentin Massys (1466-1530) executed in the 1520s. Here, the artist depicts a dead Christ lying in his mother's arms after his crucifixion on Calvary. Massys was a religious artist, producing many altarpieces and private devotional subjects like the present work for local collectors or churches. He also produced portraits influenced by the Italian Renaissance and typical genre subjects.
Nikolai Konstantinovich Roerich
Nikolai Konstantinovich Roerich (1874–1947) was a major Russian painter as well as an archaeologist, poet, lawyer and philosopher. He travelled widely and was an advocate for the preservation of cultural heritage. Estimated at $30,000-50,000, Watchtower in Pskov was completed during the artist’s tour of 40 ancient Russian cities.
