Five classic film posters to buy at auction including Get Carter

A classic poster for the 1971 crime thriller with lead actor Michael Caine prominent with fag in mouth listening intently on the phone is one of the highlights of Prop Store’s April 23 online live auction dedicated to such designs.

Other popular choices for collectors among the 341 lots on offer from the auction house – based in London and Los Angeles - include Star Wars and James Bond, with others promoting famous directors such as Kubrick and Hitchcock.

Get this great poster (pictured top)

This original 1971 UK Quad for Mike Hodges’ gangster film Get Carter, featuring artwork by Arnaldo Putzu, is estimated at £2000-3000. Caine is Carter, as the 2ft 6in x 3ft 4in (76cm x 1.02m) poster printed by Lonsdale & Bartholomew (Nottingham) proclaims.

Prop Store says: “Originally folded (as issued), this full bleed, totally unrestored example displays and presents to excellent effect, with only very minimal handling and age wear. A highly prized and collectable film poster that proved to be a defining role for Michael Caine.”

Galaxy of stars

Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope 1977 poster - estimate £4000-6000 at Prop Store on April 23.

A film poster sale would not be a film poster sale without at least one example from the Star Wars series. The Prop Store auction has a load.

This “beautiful rolled example of one of the rarest and most sought-after Star Wars posters” is estimated at £4000-6000. Originally produced in 1977, it is the Hildebrandt Brothers version for Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope (or simply Star Wars if you are not from Generation Z).

After a very limited release (one or two weeks) this poster was withdrawn and replaced with the more commercial Style C featuring Tom Chantrell’s artwork. Presented here in “original unrestored condition”, this rolled (as issued) example was printed in England by WE Berry of Bradford and measures 2ft 6in x 3ft 4in (76cm x 1.02m).

Batman the camp crusader

Batman: The Movie (1966) poster - estimate £7000-9000 at Prop Store on April 23.

Long before Tim Burton reinvented him, Christopher Nolan reimagined him or Ben Affleck played him as an older, more mature Caped Crusader, there was the 1960s Batman: definitely more comic and camp than Dark Knight.

This poster for Batman: The Movie (1966) estimated at £7000-9000 captures that light-hearted charm perfectly. Tom Chantrell’s colourful artwork features all the key characters with Batman and Robin taking centre stage. In “original folded (as issued) condition with bright, vibrant colours”, it measures 2ft 6in x 3ft 4in (76cm x 1.02m) and was printed in England by Stafford & Co, Nottingham and London.

Keep it cool 

Cool Hand Luke 1967 poster - estimate £500-700 at Prop Store on April 23.

One of the coolest actors ever starred in a very cool film with the title Cool Hand Luke. A US One-Sheet poster for the 1967 movie which starred Paul Newman but also earned a Bet Supporting Oscar for George Kennedy is estimated at £500-700.

The 2ft 3in x 3ft 5in (69cm x 1.04m) poster was designed by James Bama. According to Prop Store: “Originally folded, the poster has been lightly restored and linen-backed and now presents to a very high standard with fold lines almost undetectable, strong colour tones and bright white background.”

Open the door to 007

Casino Royale James Bond door panel posters - estimate £6000-7000 at Prop Store on April 23.

It may not be very MeToo these days, but the Bond girls have long been a major feature of the 007 films. Six glamorous actresses who featured in Casino Royale (1967) also appear in these rare format posters estimated at £6000-7000.

Prop Store says: “Door panel posters are a scarce format for any movie, so a full set of six for the 1967 film is genuinely rare and we believe this is only the third full set to appear in the auction market in the past 20 years.”

Each colourful 20in x 5ft (51cm x 1.52cm) presents a photographic image of one of the women in the film. Included are: Ursula Andress holding a machine gun, Barbara Bouchet wearing the 007 bikini,  Joanna Pettet shown wearing a headdress, Jacqueline Bisset in a pyjama top, Daliah Lavi seated on a chair and Tracy Reed wearing a trouser suit.
