The art and antiques that come out of the country can be similarly remarkable.Here is a list of five lots coming up on thesaleroom.com with cultural, historical or sporting links to the land down under to view and bid on.
Nugget
Huntly Auctions offers this gold mine nugget on January 28 along with a note identifying it as being found in the diggings of J Allen in 1867. The 5g nugget has an estimate of £60-80.
Cricket autographs
A collection of eight signed cricket team sheets of touring teams is offered at Toovey’s on January 21. It includes Australia to Sounth Africa 1957-58, M.C.C. to South Africa 1964-1965, South Africa to U.K. 1965, and Australia 1969-1970. There are also two signed South Africa Rugby Football touring team sheets 1960, and a scrap album. The lot is estimated at £50-90.
Boomerangs
This pair of Aborigine boomerangs are available from the Brussels auction house Kundsthaus Lempertz where they go under the hammer on January 29 with an estimate of £1200-200.
Brooch
Fellows offers a mid-19th century colonial Australian 18ct gold and seed pearl brooch, estimated at £1500-2000 in its auction of January 30. It depicts native species – a kangaroo and emu – in the foliage.
Postcards
This view of Mt Wellington in Hobart, Tasmania, is included in a collection of about 55 postcards of Australia. Among them are scenes of Melbourne, the bush in New South Wales and the Ocean Beach. The lot is offered at Toovey’s on January 21 has an estimate of £40-60.
Coin
Lockdales offers this Australian penny token in its auction of January 25-26 with an estimate of £150-200. It commemorates the opening of the Sydney Railway and is printed Australian Tea Mart, Hanks and Lloyd 1855.
