Castle top case depicting Osborne House
Osborne House is a former royal residence in East Cowes, Isle of Wight, built between 1845-51 for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a summer home.
The fashion for so-called castle-top boxes (vinaigrettes and card cases engraved or stamped with landmarks as tourist souvenirs) peaked around c.1830-60 and the items are now a large collecting area.
This Victorian silver shaped rectangular castle top card case (pictured above), embossed in relief with a view of Osborne House, is marked for Yapp & Woodward in Birmingham in 1851. It is estimated at £1200-1500 at Bamfords on May 5-9.
