Dedicated Lalique sale: our pick of five eyecatching lots
02 February 2024
The Art Deco glass of René Lalique remains among the most popular collecting categories at auction.
Lalique’s use of black enamel can be seen in this Dahlias vase designed in 1923. The pigment was applied with a brush and then the object fired to anneal it. Measuring 4.75in (12cm) high, it is estimated at £1000-1500 at the Lyon & Turnbull sale. View the catalogue entry for this Lalique Dahlias vase.
But the striking and colourful designs which perfectly capture the artistic currents of the 1920s and 30s, also have substantial appeal to interior decorators and general buyers looking to purchase an eye-catching piece for their home.
Lalique used geometric shapes, simplified forms, bright colours to create his trademark designs but the firm he founded also drew on the styles of other cultures like African and Aztec art which influenced a number of key works in the Lalique range.
Among the most notable offerings of Lalique glass at upcoming sales is a private collection of 137 lots appearing as a dedicated auction at Lyon & Turnbull on February 8.
