Colours and characters: Five folk art finds at auction

Folk art comes in delightful naïve paintings and boldly designed furniture and decorative items.

Cheffins’ Fine Sale of March 23-24 includes this English portrait of a private in the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot in a landscape. Painted c.1850, the watercolour on paper has an estimate of £100-150. View and bid for this small folk art painting here.
Offered with an estimate of £800-1200, this 19th century folk art painted pine marriage armoire, which is possibly Tyrolean, is going under the hammer at Woolley & Wallis on March 30. In Fonsie Mealy Auctioneer’s Important Irish & International Art Auction, this scene of Connemara Sea Lough Tryst is estimated at £200-300.
