Colourful and collectable: Five pieces of Poole Pottery at upcoming Cottees auction

Poole in Dorset has been a centre for manufacturing artistic pieces of pottery since the 19th century.

It is now best remembered for its Art Deco styles and the striking pieces and innovative pieces from the 1960s.
Based in Poole itself, Dorset auction house Cottees has been holding regular sales dedicated to Poole pottery for many years. The next event, a 385-lot sale, takes place on April 30 and together the items demonstrate the range available in this collecting area, both in terms of the colourful styles and varied prices.

1. Ice skater wall plaque
Guy Sydenham was a master thrower at Poole Pottery for 30 years, starting to work there in 1931. Among the works from the Sydenham era at the Cottees sale is this ‘Green Island’ wall plaque depicting an ice skater. It is estimated at £80-100. 2. Limited edition piece

3. Small bowl and goblets
Among the pieces of Poole Pottery at Cottees at the more affordable end of the spectrum is this small bowl with impressed decoration which is offered together with a pair of miniature goblets. At the top end in terms of the estimates at the upcoming Cottees sale is this ‘Port of Poole, The flying boat’ charger or bowl from 1940. A rare design by Arthur Bradbury and painted by Ruth Pavely, examples rarely appear on the market. This fully marked and signed piece is estimated at £3000-4000.
