Collection from luxury holiday cottage in Surrey comes to auction
23 December 2024 Among the fascinating sales taking place in the early part of 2025 is an auction of works from the collection of the late Melinda (‘Mindy’) McLean, a businesswoman who was a keen patron of the arts and a supporter of young artists. The sale of 243 items from her estate have been consigned to Parker Fine Art Auctions auction on January 9 and will offer a wide selection of contemporary and antique furnishings, pictures, silver, jewellery, designer handbags and garden effects.
Born in America, McLean ran an international PR company working on projects such as the Chelsea Harbour development, and also created an award-winning luxury holiday cottage business.
Having travelled extensively during the first half of her life, she later moved to the village of Ripley in Surrey where she found time to play an active part in the local community. The items at the auction have come from Broadway Barn, McLean’s home in Ripley which is now 5-star Bed and Breakfast and has boasted visits from celebrities such as musicians Sam Smith and Paul Weller.
One of the highlights of the collection is a painting from 2005 by contemporary American artist Jim Dine (b.1935). The large-scale work painted in acrylic, sand and charcoal on canvas is titled Just above the Grain Fields and is an example from Dine’s series of ‘bathrobes’ self-portraits.
With provenance to New York dealer Pace Wildenstein, it is estimated at £60,000-80,000 at the Farnham sale.
Another work by a contemporary artist at the sale is a bronze sculpture titled Male Acrobats by Maurice Blik (b.1939). Measuring 15.75in (40cm) high, including its wooden base, it is estimated at £1000-2000.
Among the silver lots is a large Victorian silver punch bowl by James Garrard, London 1897. With lion mask handles and relief decoration and weighing a hefty 4500 grams, it is estimated at £3000-5000.

The McLean collection will be offered at alongside Parker Fine Art Auctions’ monthly auction. Among the separately consigned lots is an Edward Seago (1910-74) view of the Tuileries Gardens in Paris which has come from a separate private local source and is estimated at £25,000-35,000.
