Cheers – five ideas to turn your home into a pub

Reluctant to venture out down the local so often in these Covid-19 aware times? You could just kit your home out as a local boozer for a while.

Whisky advertising mirror - estimate €6000-12,000 at the Victor Mee auction on August 12.

Irish saleroom Victor Mee is holding its first pub memorabilia and collectables auction of the year on August 12, hosted online. Lots range from early 20th century whiskey bottles, rare advertising figures, signs and mirrors to motoring memorabilia and Irish (Gaelic) football memorabilia.

Here are five suggestions for creating The Lockdown Arms.

Nunn the wiser

A stand-out lot is a Persse’s Nunns Island Galway Whiskey advertising mirror (pictured top). It is one of the rarest Victor Mee has ever come across and is estimated to sell for €6000-12,000.

It had to be a leprechaun

Guinness advertising leprechaun to fit on a vehicle - estimate €400-800 at the Victor Mee auction on August 12.

Stereotypically Irish, this 1960s Guinness Ruberoid advertising leprechaun seated on a wooden stool was used as a mascot for Guinness delivery drivers both in Ireland and the US to advertise the famous stout to the overseas market. It comes to auction with a steel vehicle roof mount attachment.

Victor Mee says: “It is likely that this advertising piece like others similar is well travelled and may have been as far as the shores of the US and may get that far again, as this is sure to be a lot of interest with Guinness collectors worldwide.”

Estimate €400-800.

Make your play

Kerry player advertising figure - estimate €200-400 at the Victor Mee auction on August 12

A much-loved Irish institution since the 1800s, GAA, particularly Gaelic football, has been responsible for happiness, sadness, frustration and overwhelming pride globally.

Victor Mee's auction features three “unique” advertising figurines, set to sell between €200-450 each each: the rare Please on All Grounds Kerry (shown here) and Galway footballers and a hurling player.

The Please on All Grounds Kerry figure, estimated €200-400, can be seen on thesaleroom.com

Toast an ad sign

Skol advertising sign - estimate €120-220 at the Victor Mee auction on August 12.

As throwback beers go, Skol is probably one of the first to come to mind because of the simple but memorable name. Its roots go back to the rather less direct title of Graham’s Continental, first brewed in Scotland in 1958, which became Graham’s Skol for a Scandinavian feel, then just Skol.

This Skol international lager advertising shelf light, 7 x 30cm, is estimated at €120-220.
