A selection of cats is also among the items showcased in the Scottish Works of Art & Whisky auction at Lyon & Turnbull of Edinburgh on August 12.

Karel Nekola had moved from Bohemia to Scotland in the 1880s to head the decoration shop at the Fife Pottery owned by Robert Heron.

The Wemyss name came the local family whose seat was Wemyss Castle on the east coast of Fife. They were enthusiastic patrons of these Nekola/Heron ceramic creations.

The original pottery closed in 1930 and the rights to Wemyss Ware were bought by the Bovey pottery in Devon. Karel's son Joe (Joseph) Nekola moved to Devon, where he carried on producing Wemyss Ware and training apprentices.

Here are five highlights from the L&T sale.
