Build a brilliant Meissen collection with this auction opportunity

In the November 20 Matthew Barton auction 11 figures (human and animal) are offered from the Barlow Collection, which was started by Sir Thomas Dalmahoy Barlow GBE (1883-1964), a banker and industrialist who was also known as an art collector and historian. His collection was added to by his son Basil Stephen Barlow (1918-91) and the group comes to auction by family descent.
The Meissen factory was established in the Saxon town of the same name in 1710, producing in the West the quality, prized porcelain renowned from the East. It was established by the ruler of Saxony, Augustus the Strong, building on the pioneering discoveries of Johann Friedrich Böttger.

To be a pilgrim

Barton’s auction includes figures at a range of estimates. Among the ‘more affordable’ options is a Meissen figure of a pilgrim, c.1750, modelled standing holding a staff in her left hand, wearing a pale yellow hat, pink bodice and white skirt painted with ‘indianische Blumen’, underglaze blue crossed swords mark to rear of base, with underside impressed 9. At 5.5in (13.5cm) catalogued as having ‘some restoration’, it is estimated at £300-400.

Modelled by Peter Reinicke (1715-68), a mid-18th Meissen century figure of a ewe is guided at £400-600. The sheep's curled wool is painted with pale brown markings, the oblong tree trunk mound base is applied with branches, leaves and flowers, and an underglaze blue crossed swords mark is on the rear of the base. The 4in (10cm) high figure also has ‘some restoration’.
