Affordable film posters to find at auction from childhood favourites to classic cinema

The most sought-after film posters can take hundreds of thousands of pounds at auction, but there are plenty to be found for £5000 or less on thesaleroom.com.

Here we look at some of the affordable choices coming up at the Movie Posters sale that Ewbank’s of Surrey holds on August 21.  

Film force

There are a whopping 15 Star Wars lots going under the hammer at Ewbanks, including those as for films as recent at Rogue One. If your tastes run a bit more classic than the recent instalments there’s still plenty to choose from. This British quad for The Empire Strikes Back by Drew Struzan is offered with an estimate of £200-400. For a cheaper Empire option, there is also a US one sheet with an estimate of £80-120.

Animated Classics

A job lot of one-sheet film posters featuring animated movies are offered with an estimate of £40-60 at Ewbank’s Movie Poster sale of August 21.

Did Disney’s Little Mermaid define your childhood? What about The Incredibles? Or Who Framed Roger Rabbit? If you’re looking to add a bit of youthful nostalgia to your walls, one sheet posters for all three plus the original animated Aladdin are offered with an estimate of £40-60.

Carry on bidding

This poster for the 1964 movie Cary on Spying has an estimate of £50-80 at Ewbank’s Movie Poster sale of August 21.

There are plenty of James Bond posters on offer, which range in estimate from £40-60 for a US Octopussy poster to £4000-6000 for a British Quad poster for the first film in the franchise, Dr No. However, if you’re after a different sort of British classic you might go for this US one-sheet for Carry on Spying from 1964, which has an estimate of £50-80. Or if you’re a real carry on fan, you could go for one of the highest estimated lots of the sale, a poster for Carry on Cleo, also from 1964, which has an estimate of £3000-5000.

Beatlemania

Hitchcock Presents

This French poster for The Birds has an estimate of £200-400 at Ewbank’s Movie Poster sale of August 21.

The four lots featuring Alfred Hitchcock film posters include this one for his 1963 film The Birds. The French poster features artwork by Boris Grinsson, and is offered with an estimate of £200-400. If you’re after something by the master of suspense for slightly less, there are also posters for North by Northwest, Torn Curtain and Spellbound.
