Affordable art: Five works offered or sold for under £1500 including a William Payne landscape

Here we pick out a mixture upcoming lots on thesaleroom.com as well as a few recently sold at auctions around the UK.

1. William Payne landscape

Following changes to the UK lockdown announced by the government last week, South London saleroom Rosebery’s is among the auction houses to announce a new sales calendar. The firm’s next sale is now an auction of Old Master and 18th & 19th century pictures on June 4.

One of the British artists represented is William Payne (1760-1830), a London-born painter and watercolourist who received drawing lessons from Paul Sandby and Henry Gilder. He developed a technique of using pen outlines and a build-up of washes in a tint that became known as ‘Payne’s Grey’.

Rosebery’s are offering a signed oil on canvas titled Ivy Bridge. It is estimated at £600-800.

2. Thomas Rowlandson watercolour

‘On her death bed’, a watercolour by Thomas Rowlandson – estimated at £600-800 at Rosebery’s.

Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) is often remembered as one of the leading Georgian caricaturists, a producer of ribald and caustic political comment.

But this signed pen, brown ink and watercolour titled On her death bed appears to be a much more serious subject.

The work carries a label for London’s Chris Beetles Gallery and is estimated £600-800 at Rosebery’s sale of Old Master, 18th & 19th century pictures on June 4

3. Quayside scene

‘Hythe Quay, Maldon’ by Gordon Hereward Hales – £1350 at Keys.

Barges, ships and ports were the favoured subject of Gordon Hereward Hales (1916-1997), an artist who studied at the Leicester College of Art and Northampton School of Art before becoming a founder-member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists.

This 19.25in x 2ft 5in (49 x 74cm) signed oil on board from 1973 titled Hythe Quay, Maldon appeared at Keys of Aylsham on March 25 and exceeded a £400-600 estimate. It was knocked down at £1350.

4. Sheep in the winter

‘Sheep in winter’ by Charles Jones – £900 at Keys.

The painter Charles Jones (1836-1892) is often known as ‘sheep Jones’ due to the prominence of ovine subjects in his artistic output.

This 6.75 x 8.5in (17 x 22cm) oil on panel of sheep in winter landscape was a relatively small example of his work and it got away at Keys of Aylsham on March 25 against a £800-1200 pitch, selling at £900.

5. Trees in a landscape

‘Trees in a landscape’ by Pierre de Clausades – £650 at Gorringe’s

Paris-born Pierre de Clausades (1910-1976) specialised in painting landscapes, especially those around the French capital, Brittany and the Loire Valley, some of which he exhibited at the Société National des Beaux Arts.

Trees in a landscape, a 17.25 x 21.25in (44 x 54cm) signed oil on canvas, surpassed a £300-400 estimate at Gorringe’s of Lewes, East Sussex on April 20, even though it had a dirty covering of varnish or heavy nicotine which meant it required a good clean.

It sold at £650.
