Jan Weenix (Dutch, 1642-1719)
A young man with a Delft vase of roses, a Turkish rug, fruit and a lute
oil on canvas, signed and dated 1716
49¾ x 40½in (126.4 x 103cm), 20th century swept frame
* Provenance: Gomshall Gallery, Gomshall Mill, nr Guildford, Surrey, June 1971
* The canvas has not been relined and is very loose on the stretcher, with consequent undulations to the surface and three small creases near the lower right corner. The canvas is actually partially detached from the stretcher along most of the top length (it has torn away from the nails) and down part of the right side of the stretcher - this has caused the canvas to slump on the stretcher, causing the undulations. There are horizontal stretcher lines which are clearly visible to the top and lower margins and to the centre of the canvas - the centre stretcher line has some retouching to the left side of the canvas. There are a few small paint flakes to the top 6in of the canvas and some frame abrasions to the margins. The top left corner has some light surface scratches to the varnish and there is another just below the boy's face. There is also a scuff to the varnish through the two apples to the left side. Under UV, there is evidence of old cleaning and restoration with scattered retouching and strengthening visible across the canvas, but mainly to the detail in the figure, fruit and carpet. Heavy blocking varnish is visible to the darker areas to the upper corners and margins. The surface has fairly even craquelure across the surface, with a small area of heavier craquelure to the centre left margin, to the left of the boy.
