Switzerland, Glarus40 Batzen (Thaler), 1847, var. R-803a Glarus, Munich mint, silver, weight 29,5 g., diameter 40 mm. Obv. Saint Fridolin in center, around shield within wreath, legend EIDGENÖSSISCHES FREYSCHIESSEN IN GLARUS, rev. arms of Glarus, underneath date. ref. Dav 373; KM-20This large silver coin was designed by S. Burger and struck to commemorate the shooting festival in Glarus, a Germanic Canton of Switzerland. Only 3,200 pieces were minted for the occasion.The engraver featured the founding father of Glarus, Saint Fridolin, an Irish monk who sought to bring Christianity and founded the first church around 600 in Glarus. Saint Fridolin still appears on the cantonal coat of arms today and remains thus the only person on any cantonal Swiss coat of arms. Extremely fine.
