Depicting 'Ulysses Departing from Phoenecia'

silk and wool
7 ft. 6 in. by 14 ft. 6 in.
2.3 by 4.4 m.

Provenance

Christie's London, 2 October 2013, lot 1147;
Sotheby's New York, 18 October 2018, lot 676.

Catalogue note

This tapestry's design is from the series of the 'Story of Ulysses,' which was a popular subject amongst late 17th and early 18th century European audiences. Although no specific workshop is associated with this series, the figure style, compositional details, and the use of color are close to those made in England during this period (see H. C. Marillier, English Tapestries of the Eighteenth Century, London, 1930, pp. 112-113). It has also been theorized that Antwerp factories were employed to create English style tapestries to supply the sizable market for hangings in England.
