modelled by Johann Joachim Kändler, from the series of the Four Continents, modeled as Europa, crowned holding a scepter in an ermine-lined cloak and flowered dress, on a rearing horse with tree stump base applied with flowers and with a globe and stand, an open book and a protractor, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue to rear of base

Catalogue note

There are two versions of this series, a series of a slightly larger size was modelled at approximately the same time by Eberlein, A complete set of four, of the series to which the present figure belongs, with gilt-bronze mounts was sold at Sotheby's New York, May 24, 2007, lot 269 ($144,000). Other complete sets are illustrated in the Catalogue of Dr. Julius Bischitz Collection, sold at Glückselig in Vienna on April 11, 1929, lot 40-43, plates 11 and 12; and in the Catalogue of the C.H. Fischer collection, sold at Lempertz Cologne, October 24, 1906,lot 750-753, pl. XLVI.
