modelled by Friedrich Elias Meyer, she playing the hurdy-gurdy, he playing the lute, each wearing a straw hat, their fur-lined robes painted in complimenting tones of pale-yellow and puce, upon gilt-scroll edged bases applied with leaves and flowers, crossed swords marks in underglaze-blue to rear of bases; together with two gilt-bronze foliate scroll mounts. 4 pieces.

Height of tallest figure 7 1/8 in.

18 cm.

Literature
Horst Reber, Eine Rheinische Porzellan-Sammlung, Darmstadt, 2006, vol. I, pp. 196-97

Catalogue note
Malabar figures appear in the journal of Marchand Mercier Lazare Duvaux. On April 14, 1749 the tax fermier Augustin Bouret de Villaumont bought from him two gilt-bronze bases "pour deux figure de Saxe debout, représentant des Malabares",  Livre-journal no. 193. Duvaux sold Malabar figures on two further occasions, in 1750 to Madame de Pompadour, and in 1751 to Comte d'Egmont, in both cases on a gilt-bronze foot.

Cranfield University used non-invasive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was not detected, a result consistent with 18th century manufacture.
