Catalogue note
A brown-glaze imitating Chinese wares was in production at Meissen by 1721/22, as at this time six dishes painted with underglaze-blue river scenes, with brown undersides, are recorded in the Royal Collection at Dresden. One of these subsequently entered the collection of Henry H. Arnhold and sold at Sotheby's New York, 24 October, lot 392. A near identical spiced wine or beer bowl was sold at Lempertz Cologne, 4 June, 2021, lot 1254, formerly in the Renate and Tono Dreßen Collection, acquired at Vanderkamp, ??New York, illustrated in Michael Unterberg, Blütenlese: Meißener Porzellan aus der Sammlung Tono Dreßen, Berlin-Munich 2018, pl. 4, fig. 57. See Waltraud Neuwirth, Böttgersteinzeug, Yixing und andere rote Ware, vol. II, Vienna 1982, figs. 21 ff. An early 18th century Dutch Delft bleu persan spiced wine bowl, marked for De Paauw (The Peacock) factory, was in the Collection of Gustav Leonhardt, Bartolotti House, Amsterdam, sold, Sotheby's London, 29 April, 2014, lot 537.
