Lady Evelyn Fitzmaurice was the elder daughter of Henry, 5th Marquess of Lansdowne and his wife Lady Maud Hamilton, daughter of the 1st Duke of Abercorn. Between 1883 and 1888 her father served as Governor General of Canada, before being appointed Viceroy of India, a position he held until 1894. In 1892 Lady Evelyn married Victor Cavendish who in 1908, upon the death of his uncle, became the 9th Duke of Devonshire. In 1916 the Duke was appointed Governor General of Canada and his duchess and their six children accompanied him there. The family lived in Canada until 1921 and it was during this period that these Canadian landscapes with painted.
