Catalogue note
The model of these vases is attributed to Pierre Gouthière. They are also called "Randon de Boisset" vases, in reference to those sold in the estate of the famous Parisian financier in February 1777, lot 836, and described as follows: "Two four-branched girandoles composed of a vase, decorated with mascaron, on its foot shower & base with four claws, the branches, made in cornucopia, serving as bobèche, are carried, on each side, by a child seated on a console forming the handles; the lid, turning over presents a fifth bobèche: height 14 inches. These pieces are perfect in form, finish and the beauty of the gilding ".
Among the examples listed are the pair in the Louvre (inv. OA 5169), as well as those in the collections of the Getty and Pavlovsk museums and those in the Jones collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum. A successful model, it was naturally continued at the beginning of the 19th century, as is the case for the pair we are presenting here, sometimes with variations such as on another pair in the Louvre (inv. OA 6895) where the body is worked in a block of white marble.
A number of vases have been offered for sale, including one at Christie's London, 4 December 2008, lot 230, and a pair in the style sold at Artcurial, 28 June 2016, lot 55.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
