Catalogue note
Marco Ricci, the nephew of Sebastiano, was a well established painter when in 1708 he travelled with Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini (1675-1741) to London at the request of the Duke of Manchester, and worked as a theatrical designer at the Haymarket Theatre. He returned for a few years to London in 1712, probably with his uncle Sebastiano, and returned to Venice in 1716.

This landscape, tempera on kidskin, and the following three works, are characteristic of Marco Ricci's oeuvre. These small and bucolic views were very much in demand during his lifetime and eagerly collected by connoisseurs and especially appreciated by the English aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie.

Anton Maria Zanetti, in his publication Della Pittura veneziana e delle Opere Pubbliche de'Veneziani maestri (Venice 1771), mentions that Ricci painted in tempera on kidskin.1
