length 8.9cm; 3 1/2 in.
Provenance
The Collection of Madame Betsy Popoff, Paris
Literature
A.K. Snowman, The Art of Carl Fabergé, USA, 1964, p. 14, no. 45 listed, illustrated
Catalogue note
This sweetmeat box is a rare example of collaboration between Fabergé and the Imperial Porcelain Factory, suggesting that it may have been a specific commission for an important client of the firm.
It is known that Fabergé worked closely with the Imperial Porcelain factory to produced several silver-mounted Imperial presentation vases and a further presentation snuff-box incorporating an Imperial Porcelain plaque is also known. During the period from 1907 to 1909, items from the Cabinet’s porcelain stock were sent to Fabergé to enhance their value and make them suitable for presentation. The manufacture of the present box, with the addition of gold mounts, suggests a similar process of enhancement through which Fabergé's goldsmiths increased the value of an equally artistic porcelain object.
