A Fabergé jewelled lacquered varicoloured gold cigarette case, workmaster Michael Perkhin, St P
the body of cinnabar lacquer, pink and yellow gold stripes, with a diamond-set push-piece, in a fitted Wartski case, struck to the flange with workmaster's initials and Fabergé in Cyrillic, 56 standard, the flange and interior of the lid with later scratched numbers
height 7.8cm; 3 in.
Provenance
Purchased from Wartski by the family of the present owner
Catalogue note
Like much of Fabergé's production, this object takes inspiration from the work of 18th century French goldsmiths. In this instance, snuff boxes produced in Paris in the 1770s of composition, or 'poudre d'écaille', and overlaid with gold provided inspiration for this more creative interpretation. A similar cigarette case, also by Michael Perkhin, enamelled in opaque white, is illustrated by A. K. Snowman, The Art of Carl Fabergé, 1952, no. 103.
A comparably decorated cigarette case marked Fabergé, with the workmaster's mark of Michael Perkhin was sold Sotheby's, London, 30 November 2009, lot 18.
