London
the cover enamelled in white and blue with the Russian Imperial naval ensign, in a fitted Karl Bok case, struck with maker’s mark, 88 standard

length 12.4cm; 4 5/8 in.

Provenance
According to the accompanying note, acquired by Edwin Bloomfield from the Russian Royal Yacht Standart

Catalogue note
As recorded by the accompanying note, written in 1975, the present box was obtained directly from Edwin Bloomfield, who had himself acquired the box from the Russian Royal Yacht Standard, the Imperial Yacht which served the imperial family during the reign of Nicholas II. At the time, it was the largest imperial yacht in action. Bloomfield had served in Russia under the consulship of Sir Robert Hodgson.

Hodgson had first worked at the consulate in Algiers and Marseille before being transferred to Vladivostock as commercial agent in 1906. He was promoted to vice-consul two years later, and again in 1911 to consul. Over the next decade, Hodgson moved from Vladivostock to Omsk, and eventually on to Moscow where he remained throughout the Revolution, eventually becoming Chargé d’Affaires in 1924. It was not until 1927 that he and the wider British diplomatic mission were recalled to Britain.

A similarly design silver box enamelled with the Russian Imperial Naval ensign and also by the 1st Silver Artel was sold Sotheby's, New York, 15 April 2008, lot 383. For a similarly decorated enamelled silver picture frame, see Géza von Habsburg, et al, Fabergé in America, New York, 1996, p. 148; a similar desk clock is published in Géza von Habsburg, Fabergé: Imperial Craftsman and His World, London, 2000, p. 278, no. 718.
