A pair of Piedmontese gilt and polychrome decorated papier-mâché covered vases on stands, late 18th century

each with gilded finial, floral and gilt decorated lids and matching waisted bodies with reserves of chinoiserie figures, raised on later gilded and brass circular plinths

58cm. high; 1ft. 10 13/16in.
Provenance

Acquired from Mallett Antiques, London.Catalogue note

This vase features the artistry of papier-mâché in chinoiserie and floral motifs. During the late 18th and 19th century, papier-mâché gained prominence as a fashionable material for various domestic items, including trays, vases, and furniture. The vase’s creation involved pasting layers of paper, which were then meticulously varnished, painted, and gilded. The papier-mâché technique not only ensured durability but also a waterproof quality to this remarkable piece of craftsmanship. Another Piedmontese papier-mâché vase in chinoiserie was sold Sotheby’s New York, 28 April 2010, lot. 681.
