A suite of George III giltwood seat furniture, circa 1780
comprising eight side chairs, one of which is of a later date, and a pair of armchairs, each chair with foliate cresting and beaded oval moulded frames with paterae-centred serpentine fluted seat rails, on pearl-collared turned and fluted tapering legs with toupie feet, seven side chairs with cramp cuts to the seat rails and baton carrying holes, one stool also with baton carrying holes, one chair inscribed in pencil Chesterfield, both stools in ink 8652 Chesterfield, re-gilt
Provenance
Acquired from Devenish and Company, New York.Catalogue note
This giltwood suite which includes one chair and two stools inscribed Chesterfield, can be attributed to Thomas Chippendale on both stylistic and constructional grounds with the chairs having the cramp-cuts and baton carrying holes now associated with the output from his workshop. Notably, a set of chairs almost identical to the present lot were supplied to the Chesterfield House in London, and there is a high likelihood that these seats were part of the set commissioned for Chesterfield House. A similar set of twelve giltwood open armchairs with nearly identical paterae-centered serpentine fluted seat rail was sold Christie’s London, 23 June 1994, lot 60.
