A pair of bronze and gilt-bronze swan-form candlesticks, 19th century

the trefoil-shaped gilt-bronze base issuing a foliate-carved stem around which three bronze swans sit, with a later candle-form lamp fitting

without lamp fitting: 17.2cm. high; 6 3/4in.

These candlesticks were modelled after a silver design by William Bateman II in 1834 for Rundell Bridge and Rundell. Similarly-shaped candlesticks in were sold at Christie’s London, 13 July 2017, lot 201 and Christie’s London, 24 October 2006, lot 10.

Rundell & Bridge, a distinguished London firm of jewellers and goldsmiths, held the prestigious title of Royal Goldsmiths & Jewellers from 1804 to 1843, serving four monarchs: George III, George IV, William IV, and Victoria. Their renowned legacy is tied to pieces like the ‘Rundell tiara,’ created for Princess Alexandra in 1863.
