Nazca Sihuas Textile, circa. 100 BC - AD 300

Height 72 in, Width 72 ½ in

>
Collection Benedicht Rudolf Wagner, Genève, avant 1970

Colleciton privée belge, acquis au précédent en 2006

Catalogue note

, acryliqie sur toile, 241.3 x 241.9 cm, exécuté in 1987, ©Sotheby's, New York, Contemporary Evening Auction, 16 novembre 2022, lot 115).

The large manta (cloak) woven in camelid fibers in a double-interlock technique distinctive of
Sihuas weavings representing a maze-like configuration of horizontal lines, suggesting a dramatic abstraction of a central splayed cosmic figure understood to be weeping, with the torso centering a pair of double-headed snakes, filled with further cascading snake elements The effect is dizzying and electric with the reductivist linear style predating the visual vocabulary of 20th century artists. Keith Haring in particular is known to have drawn inspiration from the Nazca desert drawings for his works consisting of the infinite repetition of synthetic shapes, outlined with bright colors (fig. Untitled, signed ©
