Le mot "Chontal" pourrait provenir du vocabulaire aztèques qui dénommaient "Chontales" les habitants de la région de l'actuel État de Guerrero qui occupe les terres situées entre les rivières Iguala et Balsas, immédiatement au nord de la région de Mezcala. Le registre de la sculpture chontale regroupe essentiellement de masques et de têtes en pierre et, dans une moindre mesure, de personnages assis ou debouts.

The term "Chontal" might derive from the Aztecs who called the inhabitants of the region of the modern day Guerrero state which occupies the territory between the Iguala and the Balsas River, directly north of the Mezcala region, "Chontales". Chontal sculpture consists for the most part of stone masks, heads, and to a lesser degree, of seated and standing figures.
