Catalogue note

This pot-pourri vase illustrates the refinement of the 18th century and the constant quest of marchands-merciers to create precious and utilitarian objects. The combination of materials such as Japanese lacquer and gilt-bronze was a natural development, as porcelain and various marbles were not the only materials used as containers. Here, as with the pair of pot-pourri once in the collection of Madame de Polès (sold at Galerie Charpentier, 17 November 1936, lot 156), a lacquer bowl with a garnet-red background enhanced by gold decoration and mounted in gilt bronze is used to hold the mixture of scents.
