Height. 11 in, width. 11 3/4 in

----------------------------------------------------------------------

(2)

Haut. 28 cm, larg. 30 cm

Catalogue note

The original composition of these wall-lights was inspired by models invented by the king's silversmiths, such as Claude Ballin and Nicolas Delaunay, who supplied silver chandeliers, candelabras and arm-lights for Versailles, which were then cast in 1689 to finance the War of the Augsburg Succession.

The Musée Carnavalet conserves a pair of two-light wall-lights from the Henriette Bouvier bequest, which were exhibited at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 1960 in Paris, Louis XIV, Fastes et décors, n°202-203 and illustrated in Connaissance des Arts, Le XVIIe siècle, Paris, 1958, p.118. fig. 5 This model of plaque, with a satyr's head, exists in several variants: some have a border decorated with gadroons, others have two or even three arms of light, like some of the three pairs from the Jean Bloch collection, sold at the Palais Galliera on 13 June 1961, lot 81.
