with an 18th century green damas silk upholstery, stamped C. SENE

(2)

Height. 34 5/8 in, width. 19 1/4 in

-------------------------------------------------------------

(2)

Haut. 88 cm, larg. 49 cm

Catalogue note

This interesting pair of chairs must have belonged to a larger set of furniture that could be compared to the one made by Jean Boucault around 1770, probably for the duc de Choiseul, and then delivered by the upholsterer Capin in 1783 for the baron de Breteuil's appartment in Versailles (see Provenance Revealed sale, Christie's London, 21 September 2022, lot 29).

The particularly slender violin shape of the back with a slight indentation at the top of the shoulder is found on a pair of chairs from the above-mentioned set of furniture belonging to the Paul J. Getty Museum (inv. 71. DA. 92). The same sculpted ornaments, pearls and leaves, are to be found in reverse, as are the spiral fluted legs.

Jean Boucault, received Master in 1728, was a highly creative artist who excelled in the transition between the Rococo and Neoclassical styles. He made a major contribution to Chanteloup's seating furniture and certainly inspired another great joiner here, Claude Sené.
