A pair of repoussé copper and glass lanterns/photophores, Italy, probably Rome, late 17th century

faceted ball-shaped, decorated with confronting dolphins, on a hexagonal base

(2)

Height. 16 1/4 in, width. 10 1/4 in

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

(2)

Haut. 40 cm, larg. 26 cm

Catalogue note

The chasing work on the embossed copper and the engraved motifs of dolphins and grotesque figures are of the highest quality, adding to the rarity and preciousness of these pieces.

Our photophores, a sort of "table lanterns", are the ancestors of the oval-based photophores with cut sides that were in fashion throughout the 18th century. Compared with candlesticks and chandeliers, these lamps had the advantage of diffusing a continuous, even light, sheltered from draughts. The glass plates served both to protect the flame and to diffuse the light.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
