Catalogue note

In the second half of the 18th century, lacquer from the Far East was sometimes replaced by a new technique: that of painted plaques metal, a technique that made it possible to compete with lacquer in particular by applying it to an unalterable support. This support consisted of a sheet of laminated iron coated with a thin layer of tin and then covered with several layers of polished varnish to which a painted decoration was applied. Generally used to decorate everyday objects, it was also used to reproduce typical Japanese or Chinese-inspired designs.

Manufactures specializing in this technique began to appear, such as the Royal Manufactory of "La Petite Pologne", and on 30 March 1771, a second manufactory was created by the widow of Nicolas-Michel Gosse and her son-in-law François Samouseau, both master painters. It would appear that a third factory was set up on the initiative of the haberdasher Granchez, who ran the shop "Au Petit Dunkerke", proof that this technique had a real commercial outlet.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
