A Charles II silver cup and cover
maker's mark CM, London, 1674
the circular body with winged putti masks between bands of acanthus leaves, with two large cast scroll handles, the cover with crimped edge, the finial modelled as a pelican and shield on a base of overlapping flower petals, in a later fitted wood travelling case with brass plaque engraved 'Du Cane Family Plate, Porringer and cover, London 1674'

Catalogue note
This particular CM mark has been noted on a further two-handled cup and cover, London, 16721, again with a pelican finial, as well as on two porringers of the same date.
The current lot features in the 1883 edition of Chaffers' Gilda Aurifaborum, described as a two-handled cup and cover belonging to Lady Du Cane. The same owner appears next to entries for a 1676 'large tankard' and seven further pieces of 18th century silver. The 'large tankard' recently appeared at auction (Bonhams, London, The contents of Conderton Manor, 28 June 2003, lot 227) housed in a virtually identical carrying case to the present lot. The 'Lady Du Cane' has not been identified but may be either Lady Florence Victoria Du Cane (second wife of Sir Edmund Du Cane) or Lady Georgiana Susan Du Cane (1838-1926, wife of Sir Charles Du Cane).
