A Louis XV carved giltwood pliant, mid-18th century, in the manner of Foliot
with a green velvet upholstery
Catalogue note
During the 18th century, giltwood pliants in this style were supplied to royal palaces such as Versailles by various menuisiers. One notable menuisier was Nicolas Quinibert Foliot, whose pliants gained significant popularity during the 1760s. Examples of Foliot's work can be found in P. Arizzoli-Clementel, Le Mobilier de Versailles, Dijon 2002, no.64 p.192.
Similar stools by Foliot were provided to Madame Elisabeth, daughter of Louis XV, who was married to the Infante Don Philippe of Spain and Duke of Parma, for her palace in Colorno. A similar pair, highly likely to be one of the pairs provided to Madame Elisabeth, was sold at Sotheby’s London, 4 July 2017, lot 69, with a royal provenance of Marie-Louise of Austria, wife of Emperor Napoleon I and Duchess of Parma. Additionally, a similar pair of pliants bearing the stamp of Nicolas Quinibert Foliot, was sold at Christie’s Paris, 24 June 2002, lot 160.
