A George II style silver wine cistern, Richard Jarvis, London, 2000

Of bombé oval form with everted bold gadroon rim and dolphin handles whose scaley bodies surmount the rims in a S-curve, the shoulder applied with a band of foliate strapwork decorated with husks and shells, the lower part of the body applied with stiff leaves alternating with lobes in shaped surrounds, pedestal foot chased with a border of overlapping leaves on matted ground, engraved with a coat-of-arms,

This cistern is an exact copy of the example, maker's mark only, Thomas Folkingham of London, circa 1728/29, which was sold at Sotheby's, New York, 26 April 1985, lot 139.

 

The arms are those of Clements impaling Gore for the Rt. Hon. Nathaniel Clements (1705-1777), M.P. for Duleek and later for Cavan and Leitrim, one of the Tellers of the Exchequer and Deputy Vice Treasurer of Ireland, who married on 31 January 1729 Hannah (1717?-1781?), daughter of the Very Rev. William Gore, Dean of Down. Their elder son, Robert (1732-1804) was created Baron Leitrim on 11 October 1793 and was further elevated as Viscount Leitrim on 20 December 1793 and finally Earl of Leitrim on 6 October 1795.
