A Régence carved giltwood table à gibier, circa 1720

the Rouge Languedoc marble top with rounded corners, extensively carved with lattice, scrolls and foliage

93.5cm. high, 205cm. wide, 73.5cm. deep;

3ft. 7/8in., 6ft. 8 3/4in., 2ft. 5in.
Provenance
Mrs Gustave Weisweiller (1883-1976);

Christie's, London, Objects of Art, Continental Furniture, Eastern Rugs and Carpets, 7th November 1974, lot 98.

Catalogue note
From its impressive size to its pierced foliate and scroll crisp carvings, this table presents all of the hallmarks of the Régence period. The cartouches decorating the table are reminiscent of the compositions by the ornamentalists Nicholas Pineau and Pierre Le Pautre and the work of the carvers from the Société des Batiments du Roi including Degoullons, Matthieu Legoupil and Jacques Verbeckt. See for example the console attributed to the sculptor Degoullons and supplied in 1713 for the Château de Bercy (see Bill G. B. Pallot, Furniture Collections in the Louvre, Paris, 1993, Vol. II, pp. 36-39). These types of tables were used in galleries to display vases, dishes, small bronzes or precious pieces from a collection.

A related table, though slightly less detailed, was sold at Sotheby’s, London, Collections, 31 October – 1 November 2017, lot 68 (£32,000).
