Catalogue note
César Bagard, known as ‘Le Grand César,’ was a renowned sculptor famous for his monumental statues and figures. Unfortunately, most of his works were destroyed during the French Revolution, leaving little remaining. Bagard’s woodware reflected Louis XIV design, translating silver motifs into wood carvings like dressing table mirrors, trinket boxes, and candlesticks. These decorative pieces were crafted in Nancy, an independent Duchy of Lorraine, where skilled carvers adapted to French laws banning luxury items made from precious metals. They created exquisite woodware featuring shallow carvings of flowers, acanthus leaves, and birds, ranging from naturalistic to formal Renaissance styles.
