A pair of Régence gilt-bronze mounted Chinese blanc de chine porcelain two-light candelabra, the porcelain 18th century, the mounts circa 1730
modelled as a figural group, known as 'The Assignation' with a well-dressed lady and her attendant on a balustrated terrace, below with a robed scholar and another dressed figure, mounted on a rectangular base from which issues the branches decorated with French porcelain flowers
23cm. high, 22.5cm. wide, 11cm. deep; 9 in., 8.9 in., 4¼in.

It seems likely that this type of group depict encounters inspired by popular scenes from the theater or in literature. Similar blanc de chine figures from the Koger collection at the State Art Museum of Florida (inv. 24.110) are illustrated in John Ayers and Yuan Bingling, Blanc de Chine: Divine images in Porcelain, 2002, p. 110, cat. nr. 61.
