after a design of Paul de Lamerie, the bases cast with goat heads amid scrolls and grapes, the bodies with rising acanthus leaves beneath cartouches and swag-holding putti on a fish scale ground, the two flying scroll handles capped with roses, with removable liners and collars,

Catalogue note
These wine coolers are based on the examples made for Francis, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater (1736-1803), and hallmarked for Paul de Lamerie, London, 1749 (Christie's, London, 14 June 2005, lot 263). Suprisingly few wine coolers by Lamerie survive, and those which do are in the French Régence style, dating between 1717 and 1727. The originals of which those in the current lot are copies are by far the latest of Lamerie's coolers and the only examples in the rococo style.
Robert Garrard revived the design in the early 19th century, perhaps shortly after the possessions of the Duke of Bridgwater passed in 1803 to his nephew George Leveson-Gower, later created 1st Duke of Sutherland. Garrard evidently achieved some success with the design, and a number of further examples is noted:
