Provenance
Maurice Segoura, Paris, 1997.
Catalogue note
These exquisite fauteuils à la reine à chassis, crafted by the renowned 18th-century French menuisier Falconet are distinguished by their finely carved giltwood frames, delicately adorned with rocailles, flowers, and foliage, and are a testament to the refined Louis XV style of the era. The lines of these armchairs are clearly inspired by the Régence period, and similar rocaille carvings are illustrated with a pair of fauteuils also stamped FALCONET sold at Christie’s, London, 12th June 1997, lot 80. A pair of marquises by Falconet sold at Sotheby’s, Paris, 18th October 2007, lot 82 is also worth mentioning and features carved seat rails in sections divided by roundels.
The Falconets
Pierre Falconet (b. 1683) was a skilled menuisier renowned for his craftsmanship in the first half of the 18th century. His workshop ‘La Fidélité’, located on rue de Cléry, operated between 1738 to 1750 approximatively. Notably, Pierre Falconet's legacy extended through his son Louis (maître in 1743, died 1775), who succeeded him and retained the same estampille. Both artisans primarily crafted seating furniture, predominantly in the elegant Louis XV style, making it challenging to attribute specific pieces to either of them. The Falconets’ creations featured harmonious proportions and graceful designs, often adorned with simple yet finely molded ornamentation.
