A pair of Napoleon III gilt-bronze mounted and cut-glass vases, second half 19th century
each of ovoid form with scroll handles and swags of summer flowers, grapes and ears of corn, the sides applied with rosettes and laurel leaves terminating in hoops, the circular base cast with acanthus foliage
49.5cm. high, 23cm. wide,; 1ft. 7½in., 9 in.
Provenance
Sotheby's, London, 19th and 20th Century Furniture and Decorations, 26 May 1995, lot 64.
Catalogue note
This pair of mounted vases is modelled after a pair of mounted rock-crystal vases dated from the 18th century in the collections of the Musée Cognacq-Jay (inv. J 272/273, illustrated in Connaissance des Arts, 15 November 1953, nr. 21, p.42), here with slight variations to the garlands joining the handles and twice their height. This successful design juxtaposing the clearness of glass with rich foliate mounts was carried over to the 19th century when talented makers emulated it.
Further examples from the late 19th century have been recorded on the market including a pair sold at Christie’s, New York, 7th May 2020, lot 72 ($17,500) and a pair sold at Christie’s, New York, 21st October 2008, lot 336 ($43,750). Interestingly, the latter is stamped ‘HV’ for Henri Vian who seemed to be quite fond of mounting cut-glass as judging from a pair of vases and covers sold Sotheby’s, New York, 22nd October 2008, lot 307 ($25,000). The quality of these examples by Henri Vian is of note and matches the present pair as well.
An 18th century pair of vases with minor variations to the mounts was sold recently at Sotheby’s Paris from the collections of the Hotel Lambert (13th October 2022, lot 555), the period mounts possibly by Pierre Gouthière, possibly after a design by François-Joseph Bélanger or Jean-Demothène Dugourc.
