A pair of Louis XVI style gilt and patinated bronze five-light candelabra, late 19th century

Catalogue note
Pre-Revolutionary candelabra in this style, with a figure or intertwined figures holding aloft an elaborate bouquet of lilies incorporating nozzles for candles, are often closely associated with the celebrated sculptor Étienne Maurice Falconet (1716–1791). An example similar to the present lot from the Royal Castle in Warsaw is pictured in Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel's seminal survey of European works in gilt bronze (Ottomeyer and Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, 1986, vol I, p.254, fig.4.7.3.), while eighteenth- or nineteenth-century examples after Falconet have also been offered at Sotheby's Paris, 23rd June 23, lot 123; Christie's London, 23rd May 23 2018, lot 296; and Christie's Paris, 30th June 2022, lot 38.
